Boy Scouts of America Learning for Life West Central Florida Council selected two of Pinellas County’s finest as the recipients of two distinguished Learning for Life awards.  Lieutenant Christian Gurley was presented with the William H. Spurgeon III Award and Explorer Joshua Davidson was presented with the Young American Award at the Council Recognition and Eagle Scout Banquet at the Harborview Center in Clearwater on February 12, 2009.

The Spurgeon Award is the highest recognition for individuals who contribute significant leadership to the Exploring Program.  Having a long history of service to the Youth Education and Services Division of the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, Lt. Gurley has certainly had a positive impact on many young people in Pinellas County.  He is a staunch supporter of the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Explorer Post 900 and continues to contribute his time and energy to the members of Post 900.  The award is well deserved.

The Young American Award was first presented in 1968.  The award is given to students who have achieved exceptional excellence to highlight publicly the importance of their achievements and service to their community, state and nation.  Joshua Davidson has been a member of Post 900 for several years and has devoted endless hours of service.  His leadership abilities and commitment to every endeavor is apparent to anyone who knows him.  He epitomizes the Young American Award standards and also deserves this recognition.

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office seeks to build our future leaders through the Exploring program.  We are pleased that our local council has found that our members not only have the highest level of commitment to our Post, but more importantly a true desire to serve others.

Congratulations Lt. Gurley and Explorer Davidson!
