The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit and Explorer Post 900 participated in a Spoil Island Clean-up on Saturday, May 3. Explorers Rachel Davidson, Wayne Hoeft, Nathan Mowatt, Robert Blanton, Jackie Miller, Wesley Wood, Cristos Bakomihalis and Cody Malander joined by five Deputies dismantled several makeshift campsites and collected trash and miscellaneous debris from a spoil island in the Inter-coastal Waterway near Millennium Park.
This is the second clean-up detail that the Explorers have participated in this year. Boaters frequent these spoil islands and many camp out, leaving not only their trash behind, but also an odd assortment of materials used to construct semi-permanent shelters. Drug paraphernalia and alcohol containers were also found throughout the island.
As Marine Unit Deputy Robert Newport continues to discover these unsightly and often hazardous circumstances which affect the safety of citizens visiting these islands, he relies on volunteers from the Explorer Post to lend a hand. This is just one of the ways that members of Explorer Post 900 are committed to serving our community. These young people continue to devote their time and energy to a number of activities that Exploring provides.
